Radio Punjab Emerging voice of Punjab overseas
The turmoil of the 20th century has resulted in the large scale migration of Punjabis. Punjabi communities are developing all over the world. Because of the peculiar historical, geographical and economic conditions of Vancouver, the Punjabi community has experienced one of the biggest growths and developments there. Vancouver has emerged as the most important center of overseas Punjabis in the world. With the problems of the growing community. Radio Punjab is trying to meet these challenges and help the community to solve these problems.
Radio Punjab is offering several programs to meet the social, cultural, family and emotional needs of the community along with providing great entertainment. Because of the conflict between our traditional family and cultural values and the acquired values of the new society, family problems arise. Similarly because of the racial discrimination and plunder several problems arise in the matters of employment. As a result of these problems the mental tension and stress increase and cause conflicts and violence in the family. To approach these problems sincerely and seriously helps to solve these. By doing this, Radio Punjab is making great contribution.
People who affected with mental tension and stress and who lack stable social and cultural values fall victims to superstition and fallacies. They also become easy prey for charmers, witchcraft, and fortunetellers. Radio Punjab is helping our people to solve such problems. Radio Punjab is also making efforts to eradicate casteisin and neobrahmanism tendencies (Jat chauvinism) among Sikhs.
Radio Punjab brings melodious kirtan to people who are subjected to great mental tension and stress. This acts as great relief not only for the body but also for the mind. This brings peace of mind for the people who are caught in the rat race for the acquisition of material goods under the influence of the western consumer culture. Kirtan elevates their spirits and helps them to balance the material and spiritual aspects of their lives.
Radio Punjab has tried to serve the entire community by rising above the religious fanaticism, political narrow-mindedness and factionalism. Because of these people subscribing to different ideologies feel a sense of participation. This has become a center for healthy discussion and dialogue where different ideas are brought together, correct ideas are encouraged and the efforts are made to rectify the unhealthy tendencies.
Radio Punjab has done great work in bringing the good cultural values of our community to the main stream. Similarly it has made our community aware of the problems of the mainstream like racism, discrimination, decline of the social and cultural values, disintegration of the family, disease like heart attacks, diabetes, blood pressure, AIDS and mental diseases from which our community cannot remain unaffected. In the coming century many people in the west will become frustrated with the rat race for acquisition of material goods and they are going to be impressed by and attracted to the Eastern spirituality. If we bring forward the great humanitarian, universalistic, tolerant, humble and optimistic traditions of Punjabi culture and heritage then this will greatly help us to be accepted and respected by the mainstream. Radio Punjab is helping a great deal in achieving these objectives as well as helping us to attain our proper status in the society.
The overseas Punjabis need an independent and impartial establishment where the entire community can bring itÂ’s ideas, problems, suggestions, and impressions, and express these without any hesitation. It seems that we have an establishment like this in the form of Radio Punjab. This is becoming the voice of overseas Punjabis. This is reaching out to many listeners on the radio and even to the to larger numbers of our people in 28 different countries by Internet. Our community should help wholeheartedly to maintain and grow such an establishment. The universal outlook and the humanitarian philosophy which has arisen from the great land of Punjab can help the Punjabis to assume a leading role in the coming century. We should help to spread this message by supporting establishments like Radio Punjab.
